In the heart of Malawi, the village of Kasakula has emerged as a powerful symbol of progress and innovation, becoming the country’s first fully solar-powered community. Through the efforts of SolarAid and its Energy-as-a-Service model, nearly 9,000 households, 12 schools, and a health clinic now enjoy reliable, clean electricity. This transformative initiative allows residents to pay only for the energy they use, at rates comparable to traditional lighting sources like candles, making solar power both accessible and affordable for low-income families.

The impact of this shift extends far beyond lighting. In homes, solar energy has enabled longer productive hours, allowing families to cook, study, and work after sunset. Schools have seen a dramatic improvement in learning conditions, with students, especially girls, benefiting from extended study time and safer environments. The local health clinic, now powered by solar energy, can operate more efficiently and provide better care, even at night. The ripple effects of electrification have also reached the job market, with nearly 100 new roles created for installation, maintenance, and energy education, empowering community members with skills and income.

Kasakula’s success is not just a local achievement, it represents a scalable model for energy access across Malawi and other regions facing similar challenges. By integrating with government efforts and focusing on sustainability, the project demonstrates how renewable energy can uplift entire communities. It offers a blueprint for how clean technology, when paired with thoughtful financing and community engagement, can drive inclusive development and unlock human potential. As the world looks for solutions to energy poverty, Kasakula stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to what’s possible when innovation meets local empowerment.
