Spearheaded by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), in collaboration with the World Health Organization and supported by the World Bank, the initiative reflects a proactive response to the rising number of mpox cases across the country. Mpox has remained a persistent health concern in Nigeria since its resurgence in 2017. In 2024, the country recorded 189 confirmed cases, but by October 19, 2025, that number had surged to 389, with six deaths reported across 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory. These figures underscore the urgency of implementing more robust and responsive measures to prevent community spread and protect vulnerable populations. The updated guidelines now offer clearer protocols for clinical care, infection prevention, and home-based management, helping healthcare providers respond more efficiently while reducing the burden on medical facilities.
The review process also focused on strengthening referral systems and improving data collection and reporting mechanisms. These enhancements are designed to ensure that suspected cases are promptly identified, tracked, and treated, thereby minimizing delays and improving patient outcomes. In addition to clinical improvements, the government is intensifying public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about mpox symptoms, transmission risks, and preventive behaviors. These efforts are crucial in promoting early reporting and reducing stigma, which often hinders timely medical intervention.
