The Republic of Congo is enhancing its efforts to prevent an Ebola outbreak in response to new cases emerging in its neighbor, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Due to the long shared border and frequent cross-border movement, Brazzaville is on high alert. Authorities are emphasizing early detection and robust response mechanisms to ensure that the virus does not gain a foothold in the country.

To strengthen its frontlines, Congo has trained over a thousand personnel, including port health officers, airport staff, and entry-point screeners, on recognizing symptoms, implementing preventive measures, and handling suspected cases. Isolation wards are now ready in key hospitals, and an ambulance is stationed at Brazzaville’s Maya Maya International Airport to respond swiftly if a case is detected.

Public awareness campaigns are underway, distributing materials to educate citizens about how Ebola spreads, what symptoms to watch for, and what to do if they suspect an infection. In addition, the national preparedness plan is being reviewed and updated to reflect current risks, with support from the World Health Organization. Disease surveillance systems are being strengthened, and coordination between ministries and health partners has intensified.

Authorities state that these measures represent a turning point from reacting after cases arise to proactively defending against outbreaks. The message is clear: vigilance, education, and prepared health infrastructure are the country’s best defenses. Congo is determined that when it comes to Ebola, prevention will be the priority, and prevention will claim the front line.
