Kasese, Uganda — Rukoki Hospital in Kasese District has received a significant boost to its maternal health services following a donation of medical equipment worth Sh44 million from Stanbic Bank Uganda. The contribution, part of a nationwide health support initiative, is expected to address nearly 90% of the hospital’s maternity ward challenges.

During the handover ceremony, Dr. Edward Wefula, the facility’s in-charge, hailed the donation as “a lifeline that has restored dignity and efficiency to maternal care at Rukoki.” The package included four oxygen concentrators, 10 modern maternity beds, blood pressure machines, and 200 Mama Kits, among other essentials.

“This support ensures safer deliveries, improved neonatal care, and better hygiene for mothers and babies,” Dr. Wefula said.

The donation forms part of a broader Sh300 million countrywide initiative launched by the Ministry of Health to strengthen maternal and child health services in underserved areas. Since January, Stanbic Bank has supported over 10 health centers, with plans to reach nine more by the end of October.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr. Diana Atwine, commended the bank’s partnership during the flag-off, emphasizing that “a healthy Uganda cannot be built by government alone.” She lauded Stanbic for “always standing with Ugandans and helping to ensure no mother dies while giving life.”

Stanbic Bank’s Head of Coverage, Sam Bulenzi, applauded the resilience of Rukoki’s staff, recalling the devastating 2021 fire that destroyed vital equipment. “Your courage inspired us to act. Supporting this facility aligns with our purpose ‘Uganda is our home, we drive her growth,’” he said.

Rukoki Hospital, recently upgraded from a Health Centre IV, handles up to 300 deliveries monthly and serves as a key referral point for the wider Rwenzori region, including patients from flood-affected Kilembe Hospital.

Stanbic’s Head of Distribution, Sylvia Atuhaire, noted that the donation coincides with the bank’s annual October Love Month, dedicated to giving back to communities during Uganda’s Independence season.

Uganda continues to make progress in maternal health, with the maternal mortality ratio dropping to 189 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2022 a 44% improvement from 2016. However, access to quality care and timely medical supplies remains a pressing challenge across many districts.
