Tanzania is making determined progress toward eliminating dog-mediated rabies, with a national goal to halve rabies-related deaths within three years and achieve zero human fatalities by 2030. This ambitious target is part of the global “Zero by 30” strategy, which aims to eradicate human deaths from dog-transmitted rabies worldwide. Tanzania’s approach blends mass dog vaccination campaigns with smarter surveillance systems and innovative cold-chain technologies, enabling effective delivery of vaccines even in remote and underserved regions.

In May 2025, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) officially endorsed Tanzania’s Dog-Mediated Rabies Control Programme, making it the first country in East Africa to receive such recognition. This milestone reflects Tanzania’s leadership in zoonotic disease control and its commitment to a coordinated, science-based response. The endorsement was made possible through collaborative efforts involving government agencies, research institutions, and international partners such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which has supported the initiative with technical expertise and training under its One Health framework.

Despite these advances, rabies remains a serious public health threat in Tanzania, with an estimated 1,500 deaths annually—many of them children living in rural communities. The story of Salama Issa’s son, who survived a rabid dog bite in the Lindi region thanks to timely medical intervention, underscores both the persistent risks and the life-saving impact of improved response systems. Such cases highlight the importance of continued investment in public awareness, rapid access to post-exposure prophylaxis, and community engagement to ensure that progress is sustained.

Tanzania’s rabies control efforts are not only a public health imperative but also a model for regional cooperation and innovation. By combining grassroots mobilization with high-level policy support, the country is demonstrating that rabies elimination is achievable, even in resource-constrained settings. The road ahead will require persistent effort, adequate funding, and unwavering commitment to equity in health access. If successful, Tanzania’s journey could inspire similar initiatives across Africa and bring the world closer to ending one of the oldest and deadliest zoonotic diseases.
