Tanzanian motorists are increasingly turning to compressed natural gas (CNG) as a cleaner and more affordable alternative to petrol and diesel, reflecting growing momentum behind the country’s clean energy agenda. In urban centres such as Dar es Salaam, vehicle owners ranging from commercial drivers to public transport operators are converting their engines to run on natural gas, drawn by lower fuel costs, reduced emissions, and quieter vehicle performance.

For many drivers, the shift to CNG has delivered immediate economic benefits. Transport operators report fuel cost savings of between 30 and 40 percent, allowing them to increase daily earnings and better manage rising operational expenses. These savings are particularly significant in a sector where fuel costs account for a large share of daily income.

The government has actively promoted the adoption of natural gas as part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on imported petroleum products and cut carbon emissions. Authorities have encouraged private investment in CNG refuelling infrastructure and outlined plans to expand access beyond Dar es Salaam to other regions, including Dodoma, Morogoro, and Mwanza.

Public transport is also embracing the transition, with CNG-powered buses being introduced into urban transit systems. These buses not only lower operating costs for transport agencies but also contribute to improved air quality and reduced noise pollution in densely populated areas. Motorists have also noted improved refuelling efficiency as additional stations come online.

Despite the growing uptake, challenges remain. CNG refuelling stations are still limited in number and largely concentrated in major cities, occasionally leading to congestion during peak hours. However, ongoing government plans to expand both permanent and mobile refuelling stations are expected to ease these constraints and support wider national adoption.

Overall, Tanzania’s clean gas initiative highlights a practical approach to balancing economic efficiency with environmental responsibility. As infrastructure expands and awareness grows, the shift to natural gas-powered transport has the potential to lower fuel costs for motorists, reduce emissions, and support the country’s transition toward a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
