UNICEF's Chief of Field Office in Kaduna, Gerida Birukila, has urged the private sector to implement a six-month maternity leave policy to help support breastfeeding mothers. Speaking at a 'Youths Lead the Circle of Support for Breastfeeding' event in Kaduna during World Breastfeeding Week, Birukila highlighted the challenges working mothers face in exclusively breastfeeding due to lack of support and the work environment.

She emphasized that a six-month leave policy would allow mothers to breastfeed without interruption, which could significantly reduce infant mortality and improve cognitive development. Breast milk, she noted, provides essential nutrients and boosts infants’ immune systems, promoting overall health.

Birukila praised the state government for setting an example by offering a six-month paid maternity leave and establishing crèches in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), suggesting that the private sector adopt similar practices.

Nutrition Officer Ramatu Haruna also discussed the importance of the state’s support systems, adding that private sector employers could play a key role by offering paid maternity leave, flexible working arrangements, and childcare services. These measures would help working mothers balance their professional and breastfeeding responsibilities.
