Zambia’s Ministry of Energy has entered into a strategic partnership with the International Growth Centre (IGC) to strengthen energy policy and support the country’s long-term reform agenda. The collaboration aims to bridge research and policy implementation, ensuring that decisions in the sector are guided by evidence, innovation, and practical impact.

The move comes at a pivotal time for Zambia as the country intensifies efforts to diversify its power sources, expand generation capacity, and strengthen regional energy links. Over the past year, government reforms have focused on reducing dependency on hydropower, which has been vulnerable to drought, by boosting investment in solar, thermal, and cross-border interconnections.

Through its partnership with the IGC, Zambia will gain access to technical expertise in energy economics, data-driven planning, and institutional support. This is expected to help refine the country’s ambitious projects, including the development of new renewable plants, the expansion of grid connections, and regional trade in electricity.

Energy Minister Peter Kapala emphasized that the collaboration is part of Zambia’s wider drive to secure affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for households, businesses, and industries. The partnership is also designed to strengthen the country’s policy framework, helping it meet the growing energy needs of a population that is both urbanizing and industrializing at a rapid pace.

By blending global expertise with national priorities, the Ministry and IGC are laying the groundwork for an energy future that is more resilient, efficient, and inclusive. This partnership reflects Zambia’s commitment to not only powering its economy but also contributing to regional energy security and prosperity across Africa.
